June 5 Is World Environment Day

June 5, 2008

One of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment, World Environment Day this year focuses on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The 2008 slogan is CO2 Kick the Habit! Toward a Low Carbon Economy. The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and lifestyles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation, and eco-friendly consumption.

The main international celebration will be held in Wellington, New Zealand.

The United Nations Environment Program hopes this recognition will help

• give a human face to environmental issues;

• empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development;

• promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes toward environmental issues; and

• advocate partnership, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.
